10 Nov Reflections from Grant Summit 2024: A First-Timer’s Perspective by Bobbi Ozanian, MHA, GPC
This past year, I have been diving into my career goals with a renewed focus, and the GrantSummit 2024 was a key step on that path. First, joining the Grants Professionals Association (GPA) opened new opportunities, which led me to pursue a position with Assel Grant Services (AGS). Then, with the support of the Grants Professional Foundation, I earned my grant professional certified (GPC) credential. Needless to say, when AGS offered me the opportunity to travel to Denver, I felt both excited and grateful for the chance to connect, learn, and grow alongside others in the grants field.
Leading up to the GrantSummit, I took time to read through the session descriptions and tried to prioritize. Presentations covered all types of topics, from pre-award to post-award, for professionals both new and seasoned, working within organizations and independently. And there were so many other opportunities to network including special GPC gatherings, a scholar breakfast, free headshots, and even opportunities to pet puppies during breaks! Planning was overwhelming, but the conference app allowed me to overlap conflicting events, so I could decide later. It also included maps, speaker bios, handouts, and even a messaging component to connect with other attendees.
Day 1: Arrival and Setting the Stage
The first day was filled with introductions and energy. AGS hosted its annual meeting, where I finally met my teammates, who all work virtually, in person. Putting real faces to names was both grounding and energizing. We shared ideas and celebrated our achievements. I was so proud to put on my new name tag and GPC gold pin, a little reminder of goals achieved and those still to tackle. Later, I picked up my lanyard and goodie bag; the check-in area was buzzing with other attendees catching up and sharing excitement.
That night, I joined two AGS leaders and my “work-twin” Kristi for dinner. Kristi and I started at AGS on the same day and quickly developed a mutual, albeit unspoken, agreement to support and encourage each other. She was also a first-time attendee, so we swapped session plans and talked through what we hoped to learn, which set a great tone for the days ahead.
Day 2: Immersion into Learning…and Networking
Thursday was focused on learning and networking, diving into the grants field, one session after another. Every session offered new perspectives and ideas, and even casual conversations offered nuggets of information that were valuable, even if they did not directly align with my role. Between sessions, I found myself chatting with other attendees in hallways and even elevators, making spontaneous connections with people equally passionate about grants.
That evening, GPA hosted a networking event for regional chapters, where I finally met the members of my own Alamo Area GPA Chapter in person. We decided to extend the night with dinner at a nearby restaurant, where we shared stories about our organizations and discussed chapter goals. I felt honored when they invited me to serve as a Grant Professionals Certification Institute (GPCI) Ambassador, which will allow me to encourage and support others on their journey to GPC certification.
Day 3: Sessions and Connections…and even Celebrations
Friday was a whirlwind of learning and celebration. I attended a full day of sessions and stopped by vendor booths to gather resources and tools to learn more about the offerings of others. Each vendor offered swag, and some even provided tutorials on their software platforms. The day’s highlight was an invite-only reception for GPCs, hosted by GPCI. Standing among experienced professionals who had shaped the field felt inspiring and watching AGS’ CEO Julie Assel receive the “Pillar of Support” award was a proud and inspiring moment. We ended the night with a group dinner of AGS staff. A dozen of us walking through the streets of Denver, sharing stories and laughter, and strengthening connections within our team, rounded out a great day.
Day 4: Wrapping it Up
Saturday began with what felt like a goodbye breakfast, giving me a chance to wrap up with AGS teammates and new friends. After a few last sessions and hurried contact exchanges, I headed to the airport. Reflecting on the flight home, I filled pages with notes and reminders of the valuable insights I had gathered each day and was eager to share with my colleagues.
When I agreed to write this blog, I fully intended to give an honest review. I absolutely recommend the GrantSummit to anyone in the field, especially those who feel isolated in independent roles. Each session, conversation, and connection offered valuable insights and connections that reinforced my journey. It no longer feels like a solo venture, but an entire community and passionate network of folks. I am excited to implement what I have learned and share those golden nuggets with my peers!
