Capacity Building  for Small Organizations

This six-session Capacity Building for Small Organizations course focuses on the key elements that will prepare a new or small organization for grant readiness. It is ideal for agency executive directors, board members, or program staff interested in strengthening their organization’s capacity to seek out grant funding. In the first session, participants will learn how to identify where their organization sits along a readiness continuum. From there, each 90-minute session is tailored to help participants build their knowledge and skills to create pathways for successful grant-seeking.

Session 1: Understanding Your Organization
The Understanding Your Organization session focuses on organizational grant readiness. The discussion involves educating and engaging the board of directors as well as preparing program and financial staff for grant readiness. Participants will learn how to identify where their organization sits along a readiness continuum and strategies to progress along that continuum.

Session 2: Basic Grant Attachments
The Common Grant Attachments session focuses on the attachments that are routinely requested as part of a grant application. The discussion involves proof of nonprofit status, financial statements, organizational and program budgets, board rosters, and more. Participants will learn why funders request these attachments and tips for how to professionally prepare these documents.

Session 3: Case Statements
The Case Statements session focuses on creating a complete yet concise description of your organization or the project you would like a funder to support. The discussion involves each element of the case statement, along with best practices and real-world examples for each. The session will conclude with practical application of the principles within the participant’s professional setting.

Session 4: Program Design and Evaluation
The Program Design and Evaluation session focuses on building the foundation for future success in executing and evaluating programs. Participants will learn how to design SMART outcomes, the basic components of program evaluation, and how to create and use a logic model. The session will conclude with practical application of the principles within the participant’s professional setting, including an opportunity for participatory learning.

Session 5: Prospect Research and Creating a Grant Calendar
The Prospect Research and Creating a Grant Calendar session will focus on how your organization can begin (or enhance) the process of learning about the funding community, researching specific grant opportunities, assessing if a funder is a fit with your organization, and finally turning all that hard work into a strategic and realistic grant calendar.

Session 6: Grantee Ethics and Responsibilities

The Grantee Ethics and Responsibilities session focuses on understanding professional codes of ethics for grant professionals, grantee responsibilities for responsible post-award grant management, and how to maintain positive relationships with grant funders once a grant has been awarded. This session is designed to help nonprofit staff and volunteers grow in their knowledge about the responsibilities and requirements of being a grantee so they are as comfortable as possible when the time comes for them to effectively manage a grant award.

The trainers for these sessions are all credentialed grant professionals (GPCs) through the Grant Professional Certification Institute. All of the sessions in this course align with the Grant Professionals Certification Institute’s competencies and skills and the CGMS exam classification system, and are approved for Continuing Education Units (CEU) by GPCI and CFRE International.
