Powell Gardens Receives $2,500 Grant from the U.S. Bank Foundation

Powell Gardens recently received a grant for $2,500 from the U.S. Bank Foundation to support general operating expenses providing meaningful experiences in nature to children and families living in under-served communities.

In summer 2019, the Gardens will welcome Nature Connects, a multiple-award-winning traveling LEGO-sculpture exhibition featuring 11 structural artworks related to gardening and wildlife, as well as a play and stay station for visitors to create their own works of art. – The Gardens will host six Family Frolic events in 2019, featuring several hands-on art and science maker projects or experiential stations, a self-guided family activity, and cultural performances (musical, theater, storytelling, or puppets) related to the theme. – The Gardens provides several seasonal festivals for the Kansas City community, including Booms and Blooms, a July 4th festival; Festival of Butterflies, a living exhibition of butterflies from around the world; and Festival of Lights, a mile-long winter holiday light display.

As the region’s only botanical garden, Powell Gardens is a vital resource for Kansas City metropolitan residents, over half a million of whom are children. The Gardens provide a nature-based refuge from the stresses of urban life, while educating visitors and the community about the importance of preserving the flora and fauna of the region and embracing local culture. The Youth Education Program reinforces grade-level science education standards by encouraging greater achievement through outdoor experiences with observation, in-depth discussion, and hands-on learning.

Powell Gardens (the Gardens) is a Kansas City treasure with 970 acres of natural beauty less than an hour from downtown. Highlights of the area’s only major botanical garden include the Heartland Harvest Garden, the nation’s largest edible landscape; the Island Garden, featuring more than 200 varieties of water plants; and the David T. Beals, III Woodland and Stream Garden, where plants thrive in the shade.
