Metro Lutheran Ministries (MLM) Recently Received a $25,000 Grant from the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund

Metro Lutheran Ministries (MLM) recently received a grant for $25,000 from the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund to support the MLM Saturday Breakfast Program.

The Saturday Breakfast Program is one of the more recently established MLM programs for the homeless and near homeless in the Kansas City metro area. The goal of this successful program is to provide a hot breakfast to people facing poverty.

The Saturday Breakfast Program occurs weekly in Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas.  Volunteers from the community help prepare a hot breakfast of scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee.  Breakfast is free and available to all from 7:45-9:15 am on a first, come, first served basis, with no eligibility criteria.

The goal for the Saturday Breakfast Program is to alleviate hunger for poor clients. MLM understands that this may be the only full meal that they eat that day. While children may receive breakfast and/or lunch at school during the week, the breakfast will help them have a meal on the weekends when no other meal is available in the area.  For parents, this is one way to ease their concerns about how they will feed their family.  A free, Saturday breakfast was not offered in either area prior to the establishment of this MLM program.

Founded in 1971, Metro Lutheran Ministry (MLM) is a Missouri 501(c)(3) nonprofit social service agency with a mission to affirm the right of all people to food, clothing and shelter, while promoting self-sufficiency and hope through direct services and client advocacy.  MLM serves disadvantaged people of all races, nationalities and religions in the urban areas of Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri, and Wyandotte and Johnson counties in Kansas.  MLM provides food, clothing, rent and utility assistance, education and employment assistance to over 20,000 unduplicated individuals each year.
