Developing Potential, Inc. was recently awarded a $53,066 grant from the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City to allow adults with developmental disabilities to actively participate in health care programs where they can progress toward self-care and the highest level of independent living possible.
HCF funding will provide compensation for the registered nurse who provides oversight, direct service and training and education to more than 150 clients, their families and caregivers at three locations. Funding will also be used to cover a portion of the costs for a certified yoga instructor, who will help clients improve both their physical and mental health by learning to focus on their body, their breathing, and stress reduction. The Increase Access to Services program serves DPI clients through annual health screenings, education, and care for clients’ daily medical needs.
The ability of an individual with developmental disabilities to access health care services often depends on those around them – family, caregivers, case managers and other supportive people – who can help them access the system and communicate their needs. Those served by Developing Potential (DPI) are some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the community. Nearly all of those served by DPI live at or below the federal poverty level. The implications of poverty are that many people with disabilities are not able to meet their basic needs, including housing, proper nutrition, and healthcare. This leads to people with developmental disabilities being dependent on government funded programs. The comprehensive spectrum of integrated services provided by DPI – high-quality day habilitation services combined with professional medical support – allows adults with developmental disabilities to actively participate in the Day Habilitation and Community Integration programs where they can progress toward self-care and the highest level of independent living possible. These services foster client’s need for independence while addressing their mental and physical health needs. This allows them to enjoy the basic qualities of life that have often been out of reach and gives the client and their caregivers the tools needed to advocate on their behalf.
DPI has been successfully providing day habilitation services to developmentally disabled adults since 1993. Beginning with one location in Kansas City, Missouri, and eight individuals served, today DPI serves more than 153 people per year at three sites.
Developing Potential, Inc. exists to provide quality day habilitation services to adults with developmental disabilities, and to support those individuals in reaching their potential and achieving a dignified, adult lifestyle. DPI has been successfully providing day habilitation services to developmentally disabled adults since 1993. DPI provides programs that help these individuals develop skills that allow them to live more independently and take an active role in making decisions that affect their lives. DPI’s services allow these individuals to achieve greater levels of mental and physical well-being – basic qualities of life that are all too often out of reach for this population.
