Genesis Promise Academy Receives $152,767 Grant from the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City

Genesis Promise Academy recently received a grant for $152,767 from the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City to support the partial salaries of four counselors and the time of a Family Resource Specialist.

The Genesis Counseling Program provides individual, group, and psycho-educational group therapy to approximately 290 students per year ages 5-14 at the school. The goal of the program is to help children cope more effectively with the impact of trauma and psychosocial stressors at home and in the community.

Genesis provides comprehensive mental health/counseling services including assessment and evaluation; individual, family, and group counseling; behavioral intervention and management; and referral to community resources and support.  The Counseling Program fits with the school’s mission by providing students with the knowledge, skills, and mindsets necessary to deal with the trauma they have experienced.

Genesis is an award-winning alternative charter school and a United Way agency located in Kansas City’s worst crime zip code. Genesis was founded over 35 years ago as a place where high school dropouts could earn their GEDs. Today, the school has a waiting list and serves approximately 300 youth per year, in grades K-8.  The mission of the Genesis School is to “endow students with the knowledge, skills, and mindsets necessary to be successful in college preparatory high schools.” We are able to fulfill this mission by giving individual attention to each student, and becoming extremely familiar with each family’s needs.
