Metro Lutheran Ministries (MLM) Recently Received a Grant for $15,000 Grant from the Frank & Margaret G. McGee Foundation

Metro Lutheran Ministries (MLM) recently received a grant for $15,000 from the Frank & Margaret G. McGee Foundation support MLM’s free Saturday Breakfast Ministries in Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas.

MLM will use the funds from the Frank & Margaret G. McGee Fund to support MLM’s free Saturday Breakfast Ministries in Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas. Specifically, we use these funds to buy food (scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee), supplies for the breakfast, and pay for the yearly permits, licenses and fees to host the breakfast. Funds will also be used to support the staff time supervising the volunteers and managing the program. We invite guests to eat all they want. MLM understands that this may be the only full meal that they eat that day. While children may receive breakfast and/or lunch at school during the week, the meal will help them have a meal on the weekends when no other meal is available in the area. For parents, this is one way to ease their concerns about how they will feed their family.

MLM’s goal is to provide an outstanding Saturday breakfast with compassion and fellowship from volunteer groups for as long as the need exists in Midtown and Kansas City, Kansas. We evaluate the goal through a count of the weekly attendance of guests and volunteers.

The Saturday Breakfast Program is in its 4th year, and there has been no decline in either guests or volunteers. In contrast, our community volunteers, largely from faith-based partners, are booked through the end of 2014.  Client information data suggests the community is still in need of this service, struggling with both poverty and homelessness. Prior to these programs, no weekend breakfast was served within reasonable walking distance for those residing in area codes 64109 of Kansas City, Missouri or 66101 of Kansas City, KS. Those in attendance for breakfast include elderly, disabled, children, families and individuals from all races, and guests come regardless of season or weather conditions for a hot meal.

The mission of Metropolitan Lutheran Ministry (MLM) is to affirm the right of all people to food, clothing and shelter, while promoting self-sufficiency and hope through direct services and advocacy. MLM does this through its Saturday Breakfast Program.  Volunteers from the community and partner faith organizations help prepare a hot breakfast which is served each Saturday morning at two metropolitan locations: Midtown Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas. Breakfast is free and available to all from 7:45-9:15 am on a first, come, first served basis, with no eligibility criteria.
