Girls in the Know Receives $5,000 Grant from Express Scripts/Cigna

Girls in the Know (GITK) was recently awarded a $5,000 grant from Express Scripts / Cigna to support their 6th annual Knowledge & Power: Small Bites and Big Ideas event.  The event will include the unveiling of our #10,000in10 campaign goal of providing our Empowerment Workshop programming to 10,000 pre-teen girls per year by 2029.

GITK’s community of supporters, who believe in the power of investing in our future generation of women leaders, will join us for our annual celebration. This fundraiser features cocktails and dinner catered by Salt + Smoke and is hosted by our Master of Ceremonies, Debbie Monterrey, from KMOX NewsRadio. GITK ambassadors and alumni will share testimonials with our guests. The evening includes a fund-a-need paddle raise, generating critical funds to provide access for every girl to attend our programming.

GITK’s flagship program is the Empowerment Program, a workshop series designed for pre-teen girls at the pivotal ages of 9-12. During each workshop, a group of licensed professional women, such as nutritionists, psychologists, medical doctors, licensed professional social workers, and police officers, lead weekly sessions over four weeks. Topics include empowerment, self-esteem, friendships, bullying, nutrition, exercise, body image, eating disorders, cell phone/internet safety, home alone and sleepover safety, puberty, inner strength, and career inspiration.

GITK was founded in 2009 by Lori Lander, a mother of three young girls. Ms. Lander saw the need for empowering pre-teen girls with education about their physical and emotional development and overall well-being. GITK serves over 1,000 girls annually through empowerment workshops, community outreach, and our annual fundraiser – Knowledge and Power.
