Girls in the Know Receives $21,500 Grant from the Centene Corporation

Girls in the Know (GITK) was recently awarded a $21,500 grant from Centene Corporation to support our school-based programming for under-served pre-teen girls.  Our programs build stronger communities through education and introduce communication on important topics.

The program’s workshops are broken into weekly 1.5-hour sessions. Women who are licensed professionals in their respective fields, including doctors, social workers, counselors, and police officers, deliver the programming. Speakers discuss essential life topics such as empowerment, self-esteem, bullying, nutrition, safety, and puberty. GITK strongly feels that knowledge is power, creating equity for young girls who may not have access to critical, fact-based information that will guide them into their teen years.

Our school-based programs help participating young women find their voices, encourage authenticity that ultimately results in healthy and confident decision making as they transition into their teenage and adult years. The knowledge and tools we provide these young women empower them, providing them with the inner strength and self-esteem to trust their intuition. These lifelong skills give young girls the preparation they need to positively conquer their journey through adolescence while reducing at-risk behaviors.

GITK offers school-based programming free of charge, primarily in the St. Louis Public School District with recent expansion into Ferguson-Florissant and Riverview Gardens.  Since our founding in 2009, GITK has helped over 10,000 pre-teen girls and their trusted adults.  Since 2011, our school-based programming has grown from serving 22 girls in one school to serving 700 girls in 39 schools.
