Girls in the Know Receives $25,000 Grant from the Dana Brown Charitable Trust

Girls in the Know recently received a grant for $25,000 from the Dana Brown Charitable Trust to sponsor the school-based Empowerment Workshop Series for girls in four St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS).

Funding will cover staff, materials, and speaker fees for licensed professional women to deliver sessions on empowerment, healthy body image, safety, and puberty.  Trusted adults will engage girls and provide a starting point for conversations at home.

The program serves at-risk girls during a brief yet critical window of time. The workshop series can be delivered in-person or virtually. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our programming has become even more vital. Girls face increased stress at home, more unstructured and unsupervised time, less movement, unhealthy eating, and social isolation. GITK supports mental health by building self-esteem and creates a foundation for healthy communication and lifestyle. Graduates are prepared to face mental, physical, emotional, and social challenges and realize their full potential.

GITK’s programs include empowerment workshops, community outreach, transition camps, and anti-bullying campaigns. Most recently, GITK has transformed our workshop series to a completely virtual format allowing us to continue delivering programming during the COVID-19 pandemic. GITK’s school-based programs focus on educating disadvantaged youth, equipping those most in need with the knowledge and skills to build healthy habits that improve their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
